What a thriller! Jackson moonwalk glove makes $350K at auction

NEW YORK (ACNI and AP) – The now-iconic rhinestone-studded glove Michael Jackson wore when he performed his first moonwalk dance in 1983, has sold at auction for $350,000. The presale estimate had been set at $40,000 to $60,000.

The glove and other Jackson items were part of a music memorabilia auction held by Julien's Auctions today at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York's Times Square.

The New York Daily News reported that the buyer of the glove is Hong Kong hotel executive Hoffman Ma. “It was a bargain - we were expecting to pay more,” the newspaper quoted Ma as saying. Ma said he plans to display the glove at his hotel, the Ponte 16 in Macau.

Ma traveled to New York to bid in the auction but also instructed members of his staff to bid on additional Jackson items online. All of the items purchased in the sale by Ma and his employees will be added to an existing collection of Michael Jackson memorabilia.

Jackson wore the left-handed glove when he unveiled what was to become his trademark dance on Motown's 25th-anniversary TV special. Originally a store-bought glove, it was modified with a mesh of rhinestones.

Pop legend Jackson, who died June 25 at age 50, gave the glove to Walter "Clyde" Orange, of the singing group the Commodores, after the 1983 performance.

German auction house pulls disputed painting

BERLIN – A German auction house says it has withdrawn from sale a painting that the Max Stern estate claims was one of hundreds the Jewish art dealer was forced to sell off by the Nazis.

Karl-Sax Feddersen, responsible for legal affairs at the Duesseldorf-based Lempertz auction house, said the picture by Alexander Adriaenssen had been pulled from Saturday's sale and its owner notified.

He said the painting is valued at $6,000 to $7,500.

Feddersen said the painting's owner must decide how to go forward with restitution talks, but the auction house is "ready to facilitate negotiations."

The estate claims it is one of some 400 works from Stern's collection sold under duress between 1935 and 1937. It is working to recover all of them.

LIBERAL, Kan. (AP) - A biophysicist has confirmed that a black rock that fell into a backyard in Liberal during the weekend was a meteorite.

Ten-year-old Chandler Harp found the 2-inch-diameter black rock Saturday after hearing what he thought was an explosion.

Don Stimpson of Haviland, a biophysicist who owns the Kansas Meteorite Museum and Nature Center near Greensburg, says he's convinced the rock is a meteorite.

Stimpson saw the rock during a visit to Liberal Tuesday. He says it likely came from the atmosphere around the sun and fell as far as 100 million miles.

Chandler's mother, a pharmacist, says the meteorite weighed 47 grams.

Stimpson says the value of the meteorite depends on what collectors are willing to pay, but it can go as high as $100 per gram.

Image courtesy LiveAuctioneers.com Archive and JMW Auction Service." class="caption" />
OREM, Utah – The eBay market research company HammerTap looked into sales of holiday-theme books sold on eBay this month and found that the clear winners were vintage Sears Roebuck Christmas catalogs from the 1950s and 1960s.

In a 30-day period, 153 of these catalogs were offered on eBay, with 73% of them selling successfully. The average selling price was $45 for each catalog, but other were high fliers. A 176-page Wish List Sears catalog from 1943 sold for $305 and a 439-page catalog from 1952 sold for $255.

“We definitely found a few gems in these catalogs,” said HammerTap spokesperson Jen Cano. "Our research into last year’s listings of the same item showed an equal trend. This likely indicates that we will see sales for these books remain steady during the holiday season for years to come.”

In-depth research into the catalogs showed that listings that included the word "Roebuck" increased the average selling price from $45 to $96. In addition, 100% of listings with the word "Roebuck" culminated in a sale.

Cano advises vintage book sellers to keep an eye out for Sears catalogs throughout the coming year as a sure profit-maker online during the 2010 holiday season.

Museum of American Glass seeks $45K to receive matching donation

Photo courtesy of Louis Lopilato-Cartagena for the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia." class="caption" />
WESTON, W. Va. – “Match the money and the museum is ours!” That was the rallying cry that launched an ambitious fund-raising drive for the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia at the 19th annual Glass Gathering held at the museum on October 23rd.

Dean Six, executive director of the museum, told nearly 100 attendees that “an anonymous donor has stepped forward who will match every dollar with a dollar.” The campaign goal is $45,000, which, when matched, will retire the mortgage on the museum building before a substantial balloon payment is due. The generous donor is encouraging the museum to seek and establish new streams of support and hence will match all donations received between October 25, 2009 and April 25, 2010.

A fun skit featuring five museum board members engaged in a whispering campaign brought home the message. Dean Six, in his best “schoolteacher” voice, asked what all the whispering was about. The whisperers opened envelopes and each held up a number and then assembled themselves in a line to create the 4 5 0 0 0 figure.

Erseline Rumbach, Lewis County Regent of the Trans-Allegheny Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, approached the podium and announced that her organization wanted to kick off the drive with a $500 donation. Rumbach said the museum “is in keeping with part of our goals of preserving regional history.”

Dean Six was pleased to announce later that roughly one-third of the goal was raised in less than a week. Anyone making a donation of at least $60 will be recognized in the museum’s magazine All About Glass. Higher levels of giving will be recognized with the donor’s name listed permanently at the museum, and top-level donations of $500 or more will be recognized with the donor’s name engraved on a one-of-a-kind commemorative vase by glass artist Kelsey Murphy that will become part of the permanent collection. Since the museum is a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization, donations are tax deductible.

The Museum of American Glass in West Virginia holds an impressive array of American-made glass, glass-making tools and an extensive library of glass industry information. Begun in 1992, the museum relocated to its present location in 2007 and occupies 12,000 square feet with over 7,000 pieces of glass on permanent display. The museum is home to the National Marble Museum and The American Flint Glass Workers Union Archives.

Find out more about the museum online at http://wvmag.bglances.com/. Questions about programs or the museum can be directed to 304-269-5006.

LONDON – Phillips de Pury & Co.’s new series of theme auctions held in London and New York blends contemporary art and popular culture in an exciting, innovative way. Their third MUSIC theme sale, which will take place on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 21, 2009 at the company’s London galleries, adds a new dimension to the auction experience with the introduction of live music and a cross-pollination of artistic sources.

The sale – featuring Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com – will incorporate four components: contemporary art and design with a reference to music, art created by contemporary musicians, portraits of contemporary musicians by top photographers, and music memorabilia.

Simon de Pury, chairman of Phillips de Pury & Co., commented: “Whether it’s Peter Blake creating the ultimate album cover for the Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in the 60’s or more recently, Damien Hirst doing all the fabulous artwork for the last two releases of The Hours, there has been an inextricably close link between art and music.”

Top lots include two works by Damien Hirst, Beautiful Psychedelic Rays of Dancing Love Hours Spin Painting, 2008; and Spin Skull with Clocks in Eyes, 2008. Both works were produced in collaboration with the band The Hours.

Also included is a silkscreen on paper by Andy Warhol titled Michael Jackson, 1984, and a work on paper by Martin Kippenberger, Untitled (Self Portrait, Chelsea Hotel), 1990. These top works will be auctioned off alongside artworks by other important names in contemporary art, including Sam Taylor-Wood, Thomas Hirschhorn and Candice Breitz.

The inclusion of artworks created by contemporary musicians is the section that Phillips de Pury is proud to introduce as part of this new concept. Presenting some of the biggest names in music alongside some of the celebrated contemporary artists of today, the sale provides a new dynamic and dialogue between art and music. Some of the works included in this section are by Nick Rhodes, Pete Doherty, Moby, and Marilyn Manson.

Photography will play a large roll in the sale, with contemporary photographs of musicians and rock stars by top photographers such as Helmut Newton, Peter Lindbergh and Mario Testino. Key photography lots include Jonas Mekas’s Collection of 40 Film Stills, and Peter Lindbergh’s triptych, Keith Richards, New York, 1999.

In addition, rock, pop and hip hop memorabilia round out the auction, with such inclusions as hip hop jewelry, fashion, toys, musical instruments and lyrics. Top lots include Damon Dash’s platinum and Asscher-cut diamond cross pendant, and Bob Dylan’s signed Greatest Hits album cover. A limited edition Gibson Flying V electric guitar, used by Michael Jackson in the video for Scream will also be offered, alongside Björk’s multicolored couture dress designed by Bernhard Willhelm and worn during her Volta Tour.

According to Phillips de Pury, the MUSIC sale will be the first auction ever to be held with live music. The acclaimed musician Matthew Herbert, will create a “sound carpet” to accompany the auction conducted by Simon de Pury.

A new printed catalog in the form of an art and lifestyle magazine has been created for the theme sales. Every catalog includes interviews with artists, curators and collectors, art world news and more. The MUSIC sale catalogue will include articles on: Martin Creed, Jónsi and Alex, Matthew Herbert, Daniel Birnbaum, Christian Marclay, Graham Coxon, Goldie and Jeffrey Lewis, and an interview with Damien Hirst.

NEW ORLEANS - Dreams Come True: Art of the Classic Fairy Tales from the Walt Disney Studio has opened a 17-week run at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). New Orleans is the only North American venue for the one-of-a-kind show, which is on through March 14, 2010 and features more than 600 rarely seen original artworks that brought legendary fairy tales to the screen. Among the Disney films represented are Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

Dreams Come True also will include artwork from the upcoming Walt Disney Animation Studio’s musical comedy, The Princess and the Frog, an animated feature film from the creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin, set in New Orleans and due for release on Dec. 11.

Visitors to the exhibition will encounter themed rooms showcasing artwork related to specific animated features. Arranged chronologically by year of release, the rooms will feature, in order: Silly Symphony shorts, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and The Princess and the Frog. Short film clips will accompany the artwork to demonstrate how individual sketches and paintings lead to a finished cinematic masterpiece.

Renowned actor and New Orleans resident John Goodman, the voice of Eli “Big Daddy” La Bouff in The Princess and the Frog, will narrate a self-guided Acoustiguide audio tour of Dreams Come True, included in the price of admission.

An eight-minute video presentation on the tradition of storytelling in Disney films will screen continuously in the Stern Auditorium as a preface to the exhibition.

With generous support from The Walt Disney Company, the New Orleans Museum of Art is able to offer underwritten student admission and transportation reimbursement for 12,000 public school students from the Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes.

Students in kindergarten through third grade will be led by specially trained NOMA docents; students in grades four through twelve will be provided an Acoustiguide audio tour. One adult chaperone for every five students is required at a fee of $6.50 per chaperone.

Admission rates for public school students outside of the four-parish area are $4 per student and $6.50 per adult chaperone. Admission rates for Louisiana private and parochial schools are $4 per student and $6.50 per adult chaperone.

Louisiana residents receive half-price admission with valid photo ID (Acoustiguide included in cost of admission). See NOMA's Web site for further information on admission prices. Tickets are available at the NOMA admission desk only on a first-come, first-served basis daily.

ABOUT THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG:

Walt Disney Animation Studios presents The Princess and the Frog, an animated comedy set against the great city of New Orleans. From the creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin comes a modern twist on a classic tale.

When the free-spirited, jazz-loving Prince Naveen of Maldonia comes to town a deal with a dastardly witch doctor goes bad and the once suave royal is turned into a frog. In a desperate attempt to be human again, a favor in exchange for a fateful kiss on the lips from the beautiful girl, Tiana, takes an unexpected turn and leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana to the banks of the mighty Mississippi and back in time for Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

An unforgettable tale filled with music, humor and heart where two frogs—along with the help of a 200-year-old fairy godmother from the bayou, a love-sick Cajun firefly, and a trumpet-playing alligator—discover that what they want isn’t as important as what they need.

The Princess and the Frog will feature Disney’s first African American princess, Tiana, who lives in New Orleans during the Jazz Age. Other characters include Louis, a trumpet-playing alligator, and Ray, a love-sick Cajun firefly.

The Princess and the Frog marks the return to hand-drawn animation from the revered team of John Musker and Ron Clements with music by Oscar®-winning composer Randy Newman (Monsters, Inc., Cars, Toy Story).

Visit the film’s official website at http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/princessandthefrog.

Don't blame fast food: Experts say mummies reveal heart disease

Taken by Klafubra on Nov. 14, 2004. Image courtesy Wikimedia Commons." class="caption" />
ORLANDO, Florida (AP) - You can't blame this one on McDonald's: Researchers have found signs of heart disease in 3,500-year-old mummies.

"We think of it as being caused by modern risk factors,'' such as fast food, smoking and a lack of exercise, but the findings show that these aren't the only reasons arteries clog, said Dr. Randall Thompson, a cardiologist at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City.

He and several other researchers used CT scans, a type of X-ray, on 22 mummies kept in the Egyptian National Museum of Antiquities in Cairo. The subjects were from 1981 B.C. to 334 A.D. Half were thought to be over 45 when they died, and average lifespan was under 50 back then.

Sixteen mummies had heart and blood vessel tissue to analyze. Definite or probable hardening of the arteries was seen in nine.

"We were struck by the similar appearance of vascular calcification in the mummies and our present-day patients,'' said another researcher, Dr. Michael Miyamoto of the University of California at San Diego. "Perhaps the development of atherosclerosis is a part of being human.''

One mummy had evidence of a possible heart attack but scientists don't know if it was fatal. Nor can they tell how much these people weighed - mummification dehydrates the body.

Of those whose identities could be determined, all were of high social status, and many served in the court of the Pharaoh or as priests or priestesses.

"Rich people ate meat, and they did salt meat, so maybe they had hypertension (high blood pressure), but that's speculation,'' Thompson said.

With modern diets, "we all sort of live in the Pharaoh's court,'' said another of the researchers, Dr. Samuel Wann of the Wisconsin Heart Hospital in Milwaukee.

The oldest mummy with heart disease signs was Lady Rai, a nursemaid to Queen Ahmose Nefertari who died around 1530 B.C. - 200 years before King Tutankhamun.

German imaging company Siemens AG, the National Bank of Egypt and the Mid-America Heart Institute paid for the work. Results are in this week's Journal of the American Medical Association and were reported Tuesday at an American Heart Association conference.
