NEW YORK — Hand-carved carousel horses, tigers and bears from a bygone era are going on the auction block soon in New York City.
The 50 menagerie figures from the early 1900s will be offered at Guernsey's on Sept. 25. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide the Internet live bidding. One rare horse had layers of paint stripped off but is still wearing bling: brightly colored glass jewels. It's expected to fetch $30,000 to $40,000. Various consignors have placed items in the auction, which also features a selection of 60 antique circus posters. Those posters include a Barnum & Bailey poster from 1912 featuring Japanese wrestlers, strongmen, gladiators and swordsmen. The fully illustrated auction catalog will be available to view later this month on www.LiveAuctioneers.com. Copyright 2010 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
