NEW YORK – As part of last summer’s Northside Open Studios, the Brooklyn-based duo Skewville created this amazing Brooklyn landscape against a red wall on Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg. While it’s been up for a while, the piece still stands out, thanks to its distinct style. Skewville have developed an easily recognizable blockish lettering and graphic that fits the hipster scene perfectly.

Twins that grew up in Queens, Skewville are perhaps best known for the wooden silk-screened sneakers they toss over telephone lines around the world, even planting a pair on a Mayan pyramid in Mexico. Calling the mission, “When Dogs Fly,” Skewville have been tossing their sneakers for over a decade in an effort to leave their mark on whatever neighborhood they happen to be traveling through. The sneaks offer a unique twist on the usual street art, as does their Last Exit to Skewville mural.

Since leaving Queens, the boys have had numerous shows in galleries in San Francisco, London and New York. They currently have a show in White Walls Gallery in San Francsco called “Playground Tactics,” which displays fine artwork themed around the concept of an old school city playground, much like the ones the twins enjoyed in Queens as kids. The works even incorporate vintage toys from their past.
