Audubon engraving, $82,250, Neal Auction

A John James Audubon (Am., 1785-1851) Havell engraving, titled Blue Crane, or Heron, sold for $82,250 at a Fall Estates Auction held Sept. 12-13 by Neal Auction Company in New Orleans. The buyer was a Southern collector bidding by phone. It was a new world auction record, shattering the previously held record of $71,700 posted by Christie's for its sale of Audubons from the Ducal House of Sachsen-Meningen. Also, the John W. Mecom Collection of Mardi Gras Memorabilia garnered $36,000. Prices include a 17.5 percent buyer's premium.

Mohawk Gasoline neon sign,
$30,250, Matthews Auctions


A Mohawk Gasoline neon single-sided porcelain sign, graded 10 on a scale of 1-10 for condition and with exceptional gloss, sold for $30,250 at a Petroliana & Gas Station Collectibles Auction held Aug. 7 by Matthews Auctions of Nokomis, Ill. The sale was held in Des Moines, Iowa, on the final day of the popular Iowa Gas Show. Also, an Ace High Motor Oil single-side tin sign realized $23,100; and a Sunset Gasoline hat badge soared to $3,520. Prices include a 10 percent buyer's premium.

An American walnut slant-front desk sold for $42,700 at a Discovery Auction and a sale of the estate of Joseph Stanley held Aug. 7-8 by Rago Arts & Auction Center in Lambertville, N.J. Also, an English Chippendale sofa climbed to $18,300; an English Regency six-piece parlor set garnered $17,080; an Italian marble sculpture titled Susanna After the Bath achieved $14,640; a portrait by Ethan Allen Greenwood titled Sambo the Beggar Man fetched $13,420; and a nautical painting changed hands for $10,370. Prices include a 22 percent buyer's premium.

Tiffany desk lamp, $81,000, Rago Arts

A jeweled Venetian gilt-bronze table lamp with a four-socket 13-inch shade and a stamped base sold for $81,000 at a Craftsman Sale of Early 20th Century Design held June 13 by Rago Arts & Auction Center in Lambertville, N.J. Also, a large and exceptional Marblehead vase, incised and painted with stylized brown and yellow roses on a polychrome band, soared to $27,600; a Lalique vase of deep blue glass (circa 1926) realized $27,600; and a Grueby tile incised with a family of elephants hit $26,400. Prices include a 20 percent buyer's premium.

A walnut pie safe sold for $1,760 at a sale of the estate of Betty Jane Wheatley held May 16 by Doan & Associates in Marietta, Ga. Also, a gentleman's chest realized $990; a step-down Victorian dresser made $715; a small oak desk topped out at $715; a kitchen cabinet went for $688; a shaving stand gaveled for $413; a coffee grinder earned $413; a Victorian beaded wall pocket achieved $385; a large unsigned jug brought $385; a field desk hammered for $330; and a barber shop cabinet soared to $440. Prices include a 10 percent percent buyer's premium.
