CHICAGO - Describing Susanin's Premiere Auction 74 on July 18 as being heavy in Asian arts is certainly an understatement. Consider lot no. 743127, a 10-foot-tall Japanese granite pagoda, weighs about two tons.

"It's rare that we don't sell something at the auction house, but because of the unusual size we're selling it where it's at in the western suburbs," said Sean Susanin, president of Susanin's. LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.

"The consignor, whose father was a diplomat, said his parents brought it from Japan in the 1970s. It is in 10 to 12 pieces," said Susanin, who has not yet determined the age of the monumental object.

The unusual pagoda has a $1,500-$2,000 estimate. The buyer will be responsible for arranging transportation.

Additional treasures are from the collection of Chase Gilmore, a connoisseur of Asian arts.

"He's a former dealer and auctioneer who was associated with the Art Institute (of Chicago). Collectors are interested in what he has," said Susanin.

One such example is a Chinese finely carved ivory teapot, 10 inches high on a rosewood stand, which has an $800-$1,200 estimate.
